CPCS WORKSHOP
The ‘Theology of the Body’ by John Paul II:
A theology of safeguarding and life

March 20, 2024
9 am to 3pm  (EST / UTC-5)

To deal with the “Theology of the Body” in the context of Safeguarding may appear surprising. However, this huge volume of the former Pope John Paul II on the body and its spousal meaning opens dimensions of sexuality and bodylines that give rise to a new attitude: Sexuality is meaningful as such, is an image of God – if lived in a fully human way: as an encounter between two persons contributing to new life in each other, and in the child, their love might become fruitful . This vision is important in a triple way: it demonstrates the inherent value of the body -which, as part of the comprehensive person, must not be abused. It shows the beauty of dedication to the other in love – which is the mere opposite of abuse. And it reveals the core value of the interpersonal encounter: giving rise to life. Neither the body, nor the soul must be spoiled or exploited; both entities may and should live – as they are finally one.

Lisette van Aken will introduce us to the richness of the “Theology of the Body,” while Mariéle Wulf will outline its importance in prevention (safeguarding the possible victim) and prophylaxes (creating awareness in the possible perpetrator) for saving both parties, as they are precious in God’s eyes.
